The Transportation Department of Missouri is one of the executive agencies of the Government of Missouri. The department looks after number of programs related to maintenance, construction, and monitoring transportation of Missouri’s infrastructure and operations. The transportation system in Missouri comprises of road transportation, rail transportation and air transportation. Some of the major highways of Missouri are:

Interstate 29- It begins in Missouri and travels through the Kansas City and St. Joseph metropolitan areas before exiting the state and entering Iowa.

Interstate 35- It is a Interstate Highway that stretches from Laredo, Texas in the south to Duluth in the north.

Interstate 44- It runs northeast from the Oklahoma state line near Joplin to I-70 in downtown St. Louis.

Interstate 49- It overlaps U.S. Route 71(US 71) in the western part of the state, beginning at Pineville, just a few miles north of the Arkansas state line, and ending at I-435 and I-470 on the southeast side of Kansas City.

Interstate 55- It enters Missouri at the Arkansas border near Cooter. It runs northward through mostly flat land in the Bootheel, where it has an interchange with U.S. Route 412 and Interstate 155.

Interstate 64- It passes through the St. Louis area in the U.S. state of Missouri.

Interstate 70- It begins at the Kansas state line on the Lewis and Clark Viaduct, concurrent with U.S. Routes 24, 40, and 169, and the east end is on the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge in St. Louis.

Interstate 72- It is an Interstate Highway in the midwestern United States. The route runs through the major cities of Decatur, Illinois and Springfield, Illinois.

Road Transportation in Missouri


The state of Missouri consists of an extensive network of major roadways. Missouri’s road network comprises of Interstate highways, Primary state highways and U.S. highways. The Missouri Department of Transportation has taken up several Highway programs like Adopt-A-Highway Program, Traffic Safety Programs and Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP).

The Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) of the department is a five-year program of highway and transit projects for the State of Missouri. It is daily maintained and also includes transportation projects on the city, state and county highway systems.

Air Transportation in Missouri

There are three runways and associated taxiways in the airport. The airlines that operate from this airport are Allegiant, Alaska Airlines, Delta, Cape Air and United.

Cape Girardeau Regional Airport

The Cape Girardeau Regional Airport is owned by the City of Cape Girardeau. It is located approximately five miles from downtown Cape Girardeau and the airport is easily accessible from Interstate 55.
